Slang Terms for Hands in Texas Holdem Poker
Top Pair - The best pair showing on board. Example: ( Player has K, J, and the board shows K, 2, 3)
Top Two - The best two pair possibility with the board showing. Example: (Player has A, 10, and the board shows A, 10, 7, 6, 2).
Trips - Three of a kind. Example: (Player has K, 10 and the board shows, 10,10,A)
Set - Also referred to as trips but most often player has a pair in thier hand. Example: (Player has 4, 4, and the flop comes 10,4,6) now they have a set of 4's or three of them.
Gut Shot - Drawing to an inside straight. Example: (Player has 7,8, 10,J and needs to catch the 9 to make the straight). Also known as a bubble buster.
Inside Straight Draw - Drawing a card inside to catch the straight. Example: (Player has 2,3,4,6 and needs to catch the 5 to make a straight)
Open Ended Straight Draw - Drawing and outside card to catch the straight: Example: (Player has 9,10,J,Q and needs to catch the 8 or the King to get it)
Nut Straight - Highest straight you could catch on board. Example: ( The board shows 10,J,Q, and player has the King and Ace)
Flush Draw - Player needs to catch a card of the same suit in order to make the flush. Example: (Player has 3,4 of hearts and board shows 10,7 of hearts and 9 of spades if one more heart comes up, player will catch the flush)
Nut Flush - Player has the highest flush possible. Example: (Player has A, 5 of hearts and the board shows 2,7,J of hearts)
Boat - Also known as full house or full boat player has a three of a kind and a two of a kind. Example: (Player has K,K and the board shows K, 7,2,7).
Nut Boat - Best boat possible on with the board showing. Example: (Player has A,A, and the board shows A, 10,7,4,4).
Slang Terms and Definitions for Other Texas Holdem Terms
Nuts - Best poker hand possible with the board exposed.
Ignorant End - Person who has the lower straight. Example: (Player has 4,3 and the board shows 4,5,6,7. They have the low straight while someone with the 8 or even 8,9 would have the higher straight)
Short Pot - A small pot usually becuase someone bet large at the beginning and everyone folded.
Pot Odds - The pot is large enough to give a player good or respective odds if they stay in or call.
Mucked - Folded cards without showing them to the players at the table.
All-In - Player has put all of their chips at risk.
Double Up - A player who has doubled thier money or chips with one hand. Usually all in.
Short Stack - The player with very little or the least amount of chips at the table.
Big Stack - Player with a large amount or the largest amount of chips at the table.
Big Blind Special - Player who wins the hand while playing a poor starting hand in the big blind.
Pre Flop - The round of betting before the flop shows.
Flop - The three cards that come up after the first round of betting.
Turn - Also fourth street, the card that comes up after the flop.
River - Also fifth street, the last card to come up.
Rivered - Beat when the last card came up.
Checkraise - A player who checks the first time around and then raises
Heads Up - When only two players are left in the hand going head to head.
Kicker -
The fifth card in the hand that can determine the winner in a relative tie. Example: (Player one has A, J, Player Two has A, Q and flop comes up 10,10,10, 2,7. Player two would win becuase they have the highest kicker (the Queen) since all hands are determined by a total of 5 cards.
Out Kicked - Beaten by a higher kicker.
Limping in - Trying to get in a hand for as cheap as possible.
Outs - The number of cards left in the deck that can improve you poker hand.
Side Pot - The pot created if one player is all in and other players are still betting. The all in person can only win as much as they risked so a side pot is created in case they win.
Straddle - Posting a blind when left of the big blind. This can be done at any time you are exactly left of the blind and is twice the big blind amount.
String Bet - The act of putting chips in front of you to bet and then going back to your stack to get more chips after you have already called or proclaimed a particular or implied raise. This is not allowed at casios or normal tournaments.
Slow Playing - The act of not betting a really good hand. Example: (Player has A, A before the flop which is the best starting hand and then just calls or checks the hand.)
Loose - A term defining a player or a particular style of play at a table which is agressive.
Tight - A player or table that is playing very conservative.
